What is your teaching philosophy?
My tutoring style is more like a facilitator who's job it is to help students to fulfill their school goals. I believe in a student’s ability to learn. They just need a little encouragement.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During the first section, I introduce myself. I talk about my background. Then, I ask the student to talk about him/herself. Next, I assess a student's needs, strengths, and knowledge of the subject, so I know where to start my instruction. I will set goals and objectives for the tutoring sections. Finally, I will give him/her homework and plan the next section.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
One of my goals is to help the student become an independent learner by allowing the tutee to take charge of his/her learning process. By doing this, the student will develop self-confidence.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Tutors do not discourage a student. On the other hand, they must bring encouragement to every section by understanding and sharing one’s struggles and stories.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I teach that student using different skills that he learned easily.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
By using the student's previous knowledge. When a student connects to what he already knows, this would develop his/her understanding.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Knowing his/her learning style.
