Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is questioning. Ask student questions in order for them to think for themselves.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A slight refresher on previous subjects to see where the student's understanding is.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Whiteboards

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I motivate my students through words of encouragement and affirmation; boosting their confidence keeps them motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Use whiteboards.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Utilize different strategies, such as reading the questions before reading the passage.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Whiteboards when tutoring math.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Make the subject feel more relate-able to the student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Have them do example questions on their own. Ask questions to hear their response.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Words of encouragement when they find the correct answers.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking questions and/or by seeing where they struggle in the schoolwork.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It all depends on the student; whatever they tell me they need or I notice, I adjust. Sometimes changing my entire approach or simply re-stating questions so the student can better understand.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Markers, notepads, whiteboards, and practice worksheets.
