Hello there! My name is Rebecca. I'm 23 years old and I attended Temple University where I received my Bachelor's degree in French Language and a writing certificate specializing in creative writing.
If you think about it, most people go to school for about 17 years of their life. It's nearly impossible for one student to master each and every subject they are taught while in school, and I have a clear understanding of that. I strongly believe that everyone learns differently, so it's crucial for a tutor to be adaptable and to be able to approach a subject with many angles. I also think that patience is key - everyone learns at a different pace. I also want to be as helpful and effective as possible. We only have an hour which tends to go by quickly, so let's take advantage of it! I want to end our session with a smile on your face and a confident feeling that you know and understand the material.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I would start off by getting to know them a bit - their background, favorite school subject, family and friends, etc., so that I can establish both a friendship and a tutor-student relationship. I would then ask what we would be working on and their goal(s) for our session. And from there, we would get right into it!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by trying many different learning methods. Every student learns differently, and for some, it takes a while to find that one approach that really works for them. So we would try out different ways to learn until one really clicks and can be applied to various subjects.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by using a personal example in whatever subject we're working on. This is why getting to know a student is very important to me. Say the student has a brother named Bob. I can use Bob as part of an example to redirect the student's focus.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would approach it in a different way until the student understands it. There are many different ways to learn, and I would try each and every one of them until the student gets it and feels comfortable.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

If I am unsure that a student understands the material, I would ask them questions to clarify and make a short mock quiz, as well as asking the student to show their work.
