The acquisition and sharing of knowledge is a passion I have continued to pursue through many of life's outlets. I began with the study of biology and the Spanish language at The University of Virginia's College at Wise, where I completed a Bachelor's in 2013. It was during this degree I studied conservation biology and the contrast of the English and Spanish languages at The University of Huelva located in southern Spain. Immediately following my undergraduate career, I continued to hone skills of science while working for The United States Geological Survey outside of Washington, D.C. Here I obtained a wide variety of laboratory and field knowledge prior to beginning a Master's in Aquatic Ecology at Purdue University. Since enrollment, I have completed graduate studies for a cumulative seven years of experience in biology, Spanish, and ecological statistics, utilizing each in both an academic and professional environment.

During all degrees and employment opportunities teaching, tutoring, and mentoring have been an important part of both my own development and the development of others. I have tutored multiple subjects in biology and Spanish, ranging from introductory courses to advanced courses intended for majors within the disciplines. In addition, I have been an instructor at Purdue University where I led both lab and lecture-style sessions. During both degrees and employment in between, I have mentored individuals from middle school age through graduate students not only in these subjects, but also general success in an academic environment. I would be pleased to offer the expertise gained from these experiences in helping students achieve success at Varsity Tutors.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

为了成为一个成功的教师,必须波形的rstand that there are a variety of students which learn in a variety of ways. The best instructor is able to be flexible enough to utilize all tools and strategies at their disposal in order to best accommodate a group or individual. Through versatility in teaching and a passion for the students, one cannot only be a teacher, but a mentor for overall success.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I believe it important to get to know the student's academic background and goals. For example, why are they taking the course they need assistance in? What are they interested in ultimately achieving? Afterwards, identifying problem areas would be the next logical step. Once the student is assessed and areas of difficulty are identified, it is best to make a tentative plan of action and discuss what is expected of the student and what will be provided by the tutor.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

One of the best ways to assist students in gaining their own academic independence is to set goals for them prior to each session. Have them work things out on their own, explain them, then provide corrections where necessary. Additionally, offer the student various strategies for learning, such as improved note taking, approaches for studying, and assistance with time management. Finally, follow up on information given. If something is working, encourage its continued use. If not, help the student use a different approach that will ultimately make them a better learner.
