Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student is capable of success! They must simply discover the best methods of learning and teaching that work for them!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student as a person in addition to their preferences in learning style. Also, evaluate their skill set for whatever subject the student is being tutoring in.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By showing them how successful they can be. Once we work together and they begin to receive higher grades and understanding, the confidence will come naturally!

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

For in-person tutoring: notebook, flashcards, textbooks, etc. For online tutoring: the online platform, online flashcards, practice questions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I think it is important to outline what will be covered in a tutoring session at the start of the session. Doing so allows the student to keep track of their progress and the timing of the session, therefore keeping motivation high.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

It is best to figure out a student's strength and preferred learning style. Once I have this information, I can tailor our tutoring sessions to best fit the student's needs and skills.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When a student is struggling with a particular skill or concept, I believe it is crucial to get to the bottom of the student's confusion. If there are core concepts that this idea builds upon, I would ensure that the student had a deep understanding of the more basic ideas. Then, I would use techniques to build on the core idea until the larger concept is understood.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I believe that practicing a particular concept, be it reading comprehension or geometry, helps solidify understanding. If a student gets a practice question wrong, I would work with the student to figure out their thought process and explain the error. The tutoring company offers great practice questions and resources for students to use with their tutors.
