I am an experienced tutor who has worked with elementary to college level students. I also spent a lot of time teaching and training NAVY personnel how to operate submarines and aircraft carriers in a one on one format. Through my experience I have gained a deeper understanding of how to adapt my teaching style to fit a student's individual needs. I enjoy helping students of all ages and learning levels, and I like to see the pride they take in completing difficult tasks. When I'm not working you can usually find me hanging out with my two dogs and some friends, playing sports, or relaxing at the movie theater. Subjects I currently tutor are algebra, trigonometry, geometry, elementary and middle school math, homework support, history, and science.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find out what are the student's hobbies and interests, so that I can relate the learning material back to something they enjoy.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching a student that they are smart and have the tools to overcome difficulties is when the student becomes a great independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keeping learning fun and relating the material back to something the student is interested in is how I keep students motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

There are many ways to approach learning different subjects, so I will try several different approaches until I find one that clicks with that individual student.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When working with students I like to keep things fun, and I do my best to relate the learning material to something that is interesting to the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

When I can get a student to see how a particular subject can relate to something that interests them they become more motivated and are able to get more engaged.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I like to have students walk me through a couple of the problems they are working on and explain to me how and why they did them the way they did. Through this I can tell if they really do understand the material, and I am able to present future information in a way that is more readily understandable for how they think.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I let students know that they are smart and that lots of good students struggle with these same topics. At the same time I make sure that they have the tools to do the job, so they are able to overcome any challenges.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Each student is different, but by getting to know them and becoming invested in their success I am able to present material in the way that is best for that individual student.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Let's learn something new, and have fun while doing it.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

When I meet with a student for the first time I have them take me through how they would solve different problems, so I can assess their needs and how their thought process works. From there I have a better idea of how to tailor that students tutoring sessions to best fit their needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I try to use the same material in my tutoring sessions that the student is already familiar with (like their workbook and notes). Sometimes I also have them take notes on what we are going over so that if they forget how to do those problems in the future, they will have a reference to go back to, and won't necessarily need a tutor to go back over it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I try to help students break down the words into something that they are more familiar with and is easier for them to grasp.
