Although I'm currently a part time student studying to be a chemist, working through math problems is oddly enough one of the most enjoyable things for me. It can be tough and challenging, but satisfying at the same time, like a puzzle with many pieces. I like to be laid back and relaxed, though I highly enjoy teaching others on a one-to-one basis and showing them how math can be useful. Learning and teaching about practical applications or giving real world examples of how math is used or how it is derived can help a student to understand a subject to appreciate it.

I have personal experience working with ADHD, Depression, and Anxiety and can sometimes shed different light on a topic or different methods of learning. I've been tutoring since January 2016 and have a fairly flexible schedule, wanting to accommodate my students and their needs as much as I can. I prefer any session cancelations to be done more than 24 hours in advance, though I understand emergencies and illnesses happen.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd tell them a little about myself and like to hear about them in return, ask what they're hoping to gain and get particular help with, and then hop into tutoring once we're both ready.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Giving examples of practical applications and where what they're learning is used. A lot of times, for math, students feel that what they're learning is pointless and not often used, which isn't the case. While they might not realize it, it's everywhere and they probably use it inadvertently.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Take it step by step, try to break it down easier, or explain it in a different way while still getting to the same meaning.
