After spending some time as a rebellious teenager who almost flunked out of high school, I taught myself to be a straight-A student. I went on to earn perfect scores on my verbal, written, and literature subject SATs and to graduate Magna Cum Laude from a prestigious liberal arts school. I'm now a career writer, and I tutor because I love helping kids find the joy of learning and succeeding.

In my years of experience as a reading tutor for underserved kids, a counselor at a Cornell University academic summer camp, and a teacher in a fifth-grade classroom, I've learned how to inspire even the most reluctant learners to love using their minds. There's nothing more gratifying to me then seeing a student understand, and I'm privileged to witness that moment often.

Whether your student needs to master the art of writing the five-paragraph essay, prepare for the SAT, or write their personal statement, I can help them reach their highest potential and love their academic success. And I might even make some bad puns while I'm doing it. I can't wait to hear from you!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I listen to students, understand where they're starting from, and communicate with them in ways that work for them. I make sure to always ask questions and drive participation. Lessons are a conversation that leaves students with the knowledge they need to succeed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I start by getting to know a little bit about a student's interests and academic goals, including why they're doing tutoring.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I teach students my methods for learning independently, which work really well! I went to a school where if you didn't learn by yourself, you would flunk, so I know a lot of tricks for getting to your A-game.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To help a student stay motivated, I first have a conversation with them about what motivates them personally. Not everybody is motivated by getting a great grade; when you're in school, it's hard to see why good grades are important! I work with students to figure out the reasons why succeeding in school matters to THEM, and help them keep their eye on that prize!
