I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a Master of Arts degree in Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12) both from Adelphi University. What is your teaching philosophy?

I can help a student become an independent learner by first modeling with the student, and then giving the student time on his or her own to problem solve. I would teach the student strategies to help him or her excel.

I would help a student stay motivated by referring to his or her goals for the session. I would encourage the student and provide positive feedback whenever possible.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would definitely find another method to use to help the student better understand.

I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by breaking the text down and translating complicated words and phrases to everyday language.

The strategies I have found to be most successful when working with a student are modeling, giving various types of examples, and showing several methods to solve problems.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get excited or engaged with a subject he or she is struggling in by finding real-world related problems, or problems that involve that student's personal interests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To be sure that a student understands the material, I would give mini quizzes, written and verbal, and I would ask students to relay why we do certain things to solve certain types of problems.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

To build a student's confidence in a subject, you have to give positive reinforcement. Discuss where students may make mistakes and analyze why they may make those mistakes. You must focus on a student's strengths.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

To evaluate a student's needs, I sometimes start off with something challenging. For example, in solving a two step equation, a student may make careless mistakes with operations. By giving this type of problem, I know where to begin helping: with arithmetic.

I adapt my tutoring to the needs of the student by goal-setting with the student at the beginning of the session.
