我最近收到我从th经济学学位e University of Chicago. My tutoring experience has primarily been one-on-one with elementary, middle school, and high school students. I believe doing well on tests involves more than knowing the subject material. I emphasize test-taking strategies, like process of elimination, ignoring irrelevant information, and pacing. More than anything, I hope to help students build the confidence they need to ace their tests and succeed in college and beyond. In high school and college, my favorite subjects were in the social sciences, math, and Spanish. I also ran in my H.S. cross-country and track teams, and I continue to run regularly now.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

More than anything, I hope to help students build the confidence they need to ace their tests and succeed in college and beyond.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Discuss a student's goals and how they feel about a particular subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Foster their intellectual curiosity. Students need to desire to learn in order for them to be successful.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Credit them for their improvements.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain the big picture. Connect it somehow to a real-life application. Think of different ways to teach a concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Visualization is key to reading comprehension, so I would help students draw mental imagery.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The first few sessions help me diagnose what a student's level of understanding is and how to communicate with them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Explain how the subject might help them with their future endeavors and studies.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Asking a student to teach me the material ensures that they truly understand.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice makes perfect, so lots of sample problems and tests are key to building confidence in a subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The first few sessions, I diagnose a student's level of understanding. I also gauge the best ways to communicate concepts to them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Ask them questions and address their anxieties or problems. Tutoring is a two-way street, and having some regular dialogue is key to having each student succeed.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Basics like textbooks, paper, and pencil work best in math. Flashcards are useful in certain subjects.
