What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students who have a desire to learn can learn. When we change the way we think about things and approach them from a positive view, we open ourselves up for success.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I would begin to build rapport by asking questions to get to know the students. Next, I would access the students' needs and discuss a plan of action to best service them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I assist students in becoming independent learners by building confidence and teaching students how to properly research and utilize resources available to them.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
As a teacher it is important to not always point out a student's flaws and shortcomings. I love to keep my students motivated by celebrating their accomplishments and reviewing their progress with them periodically.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
In order to assist a student who is struggling with a particular subject, it is important to understand the reason for the deficiency. Some students merely lack confidence, while others may have learning difficulties. Once I understand the backstory, I can create a plan of action tailored around the student's specific needs and learning style.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Graphic organizers are a great tool to assist students with reading comprehension. Teaching students how to properly use them can really help.

Breaking down concepts can help a student get excited about a subject. As they begin to understand, I gradually build on their knowledge and build confidence.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student understands. Also, I often have the student tell me what they know so that I can assess whether they need more clarification.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Introducing basic level concepts builds confidence. I introduce higher level skills gradually so as not to overwhelm the student.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Dependent on the subject, I use rubrics and assessment tests to evaluate a student's needs.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Getting to know the students helps me adapt my tutoring to their needs. Each student is different. I ask a lot of questions to ensure that I'm helping the student as best I can.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The materials I use during a session depend on the subject and grade level of the student. I have used textbooks, worksheets, and manipulatives (i.e. counters, chalk, blocks, money, rulers, measuring tape, etc.).
