As an admirer of all things great and an aspirant of things exceptional, my life has been an odyssey fueled by the notion of achievement. Life has continuously thrust me into situations that serve as eternal instances of growth and opportunity. Additionally, I have been compelled to assume leadership positions in many areas of my human experience. With threads of success and failure delicately woven into the fabric of my work, I am humbled by the realization that life, like science, is a perpetual state of refinement.
The complex web of challenges in biology is of great interest to me. As an aspiring physician, knowing how the body works as well as environmental effects on the body will play an important role in my future career. Everyday I work towards this goal through my studies at school and summer opportunities. The summer after my freshman year, I had the pleasure of conducting research at the University of California Los Angeles, studying public health and health disparities in the Los Angeles community. I continued my pursuit of education in science the following summer by shadowing Dr. Lisa Bradley, a general practitioner in Los Angeles, California. While shadowing, I was able to learn proper patient etiquette, view several different types of women's health procedures, and conduct weekly women's health clinics in lower income neighborhoods; instructing them on the importance of yearly mammograms, healthy eating, and proper exercise habits to aid in the prevention of breast cancer. Growing up in Los Angeles, California, in a lower income neighborhood where health issues are not taken as seriously as they should be, has given me a heightened affinity for the importance of community based healthcare programs and seeing such challenges in healthcare solved. Diversity is what makes Los Angeles such a beautiful melting pot of cultures, and I am making an effort to appeal to these other cultures, specifically, the growing Spanish speaking community. I am currently a Spanish major on a pre-medicine track at Spelman College and I spent the fall 2013 semester in Madrid, Spain practicing the language and learning about the Spanish culture. I was also afforded the opportunity to share my love for education while abroad through teaching English to third grade students and tutoring in English in my home daily.
As an undergraduate student, we all stand at a pivotal point in our journey toward equality, relevance, and prominence in the eyes of the world. In the spirit of achievement, I seek to personify the best possibilities that the imagination can fathom. Understanding the quintessence of adequate medical information and the effect of this on healthy lifestyles, I am dedicated to blazing trails towards new, creative, and long lasting improvements on such ideals. It is my intent to serve not only my community but also communities worldwide in ways that add value to the lives of each citizen. Above all, I seek to raise the human condition to a level that is fair and acceptable for all of humanity.
