I am a student at Middlebury College and I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in International Relations, as well as studying Japanese and Linguistics. I am a National Merit Scholar and a United States Presidential Scholar, and have an AP International Diploma. I have always enjoyed working in a tutor/mentor position, and have informal experience tutoring at all ages, from young children to peers to adults. My most rewarding tutoring experience so far has been teaching ESL for adults in Japan as a Red Cross volunteer. I taught there for one year, in both in-class settings and more informal meetings held once weekly to support struggling students. My favorite topic to tutor is English language arts, for ESL/EFL/ESOL students as well as native English speakers.
I believe that strong writing, reading, and communication skills truly enhance quality of life and are necessary skills for understanding and interacting with the world. I enjoy helping students build their vocabulary, engage with literature, establish their voice in writing, and learn how to articulate their ideas effectively in order to succeed in school and in life. However, I am versatile and am also an effective tutor in mathematics, Japanese, and test prep for state and national standardized tests. I have excelled in all of these areas throughout my academic career, have found them incredibly useful skills, and am excited to share my expertise with you!
My favorite thing about teaching in any subject is when a student has an "aha moment" when they finally understand a difficult piece of material after struggling with it. I know that every student has a different learning style, and I love working with students to find the learning style that works best for them to help them reach their full potential. I welcome students of any and all ages and abilities, and do my best to tailor my teaching to fit each student's personal needs, strengths, and goals.
Outside of academia, I am an older sister, a flute player, and an avid reader. Recreationally, I love swimming, baking, doing puzzles, and playing with my puppies. If you feel like I would be a good match for your tutoring needs, please contact me! I am easy to reach and respond quickly. I also welcome feedback from students and parents to help me improve my methods.
I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your academic goals!
