Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I firmly believe that every child is capable of learning at any level, willing to learn when presented with the right tools, and excels at any task when given the necessary supports. Whether my students excels or fails is a direct result of my ability to provide them with the necessary support they require.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

At the first session, my main goal is to establish a rapport. Building a relationship with a student is an integral part of laying the groundwork for phenomenal learning. A typical first session will be based on me getting to know the student and their needs-from the student's point of view.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help students become independent learners by allowing them to take control of their education. Keeping students informed about their progress allows them to understand where they are and gives them a roadmap to where they want to be. It also allows for the opportunity to celebrate incremental success along the way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I provide students with strategies to use while they are reading to aid in their reading comprehension.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

As a professional, when a student is having difficulty learning a concept, it is my job to use my expertise to approach the concept in a different way. It is most helpful to spend time with the student going step by step to determine where the confusion is occurring.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Assessing to find out where student needs are, setting incremental goals, and celebrating small successes along the way

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help the student get invested in his/her own success by setting small goals together. Creating a visual to target these goals and each step the students reaches along the way gets students engaged and excited about achieving long-term success.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I check for understanding every 5-10 minutes when teaching a concept to a student. I do this by Q&A, performance tasks, and concept review at the end of a session.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Confidence is built by allowing students to feel successful. When the "big goal" is still miles away, I set little goals along the path so that students can feel successful as they are working toward long-term goals.
