I have had the extreme good fortune of receiving a fine education in a subject (History) I feel very passionate about. Since then, I have enriched that education via an unbounded curiosity about the world and its inhabitants combined with a strong zest for learning. My personal desire to put this knowledge to good use by helping to educate others is precisely why I became a teacher/tutor. Every single person on this Earth is capable of learning no matter what their age or circumstances; it is simply a question of effort. Through patience and persistence comes perseverance!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Patience and persistence leads to perseverance. If a student is willing to put in the necessary effort they will receive the results they desire.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would find out what their particular goals were for receiving tutoring. Then we would both outline what kind of work was required to achieve them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Independent learning can be achieved by enhancing organizational skills, note taking, and test preparation (studying).

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by enabling them to realize how academic success, at all levels, is inextricably bound to the achievement of whatever their long-term life goals may be.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

We would drill on this skill or concept at least twice per meeting; One drill at the beginning of the session together, and another to be demonstrated independently at the end of the session.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Repeated practice and ample discussion of material can build reading comprehension quite well.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help that student either find something they found interesting within that subject, or get them to see how getting through said subject is essential to achieving their long-term academic goals.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have the student explain the material to me or to demonstrate in some other equivalent way that they grasped said material.
