What is your teaching philosophy?

My experience working in a diverse environment has led me to understand the need for differentiated instructional strategies to address the varied backgrounds and learning capabilities of each student. I am aware of social, ethical and human issues while teaching, and the cultural differences that exist in this global world, and aim to meet the needs of a diverse population. My instructional strategies and philosophy are grounded in my understanding of the issues of equity and fairness, with the belief that all students are appreciated, shown respect and expected to treat each other with the same dignity. Furthermore, effective communication is essential for a productive learning environment. Instructions are to be communicated both written and orally. Routine feedback helps to build and encourage students throughout the learning process.

Provide real-world examples and applications; use various teaching tools.

Break down the subject objectives into smaller, manageable modules for learning.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Active listening skills activities. Use graphic organizers. Metacognitive strategies. Summarizing. Answering questions about a story or passage.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Building an environment of trust and confidence through clear and concise communication. Having patience, listening, and assessing key areas of struggle. Taking the students through short activities. Developing a step-by-step process in solving problems or comprehension.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I always use real-world examples and experiences to help students understand why the subject is important to learn.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I have the students do similar activities or problems on their own to be sure that they understand the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Depending on the area of need, I use several tools and materials for visual, listening and writing skills to assist the student. For example, the use of flashcards, videos, etc., to help those who have difficulty learning by listening.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use various materials to provide an enriched learning experience: worksheets, sample exercises and tests, graphs, charts, maps, journals, and videos are examples of some materials that I use during tutoring sessions.
