My job isn't just to work with your child to help them academically; my hope is always to help students see how magical, fun, and powerful learning is. My 'day job' is in book publishing, and so I've perfected my approach to bettering students' understandings, enjoyment, and comprehension of what they are learning in their reading and writing courses. Incredibly well-read, I can help foster a love for reading, and an admiration for the written word. I look forward to work with you and your child on this journey.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

To ask questions, and let students come to the answer themselves

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would talk to the student about how they feel about school, their favorite things, and their favorite subjects.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By sticking to a largely Socratic method, I help students become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help them stay motivated by trying to impart the "treat yo'self" message when they do incredible work at the end of each week. It's a great motivator.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Ask questions and use various tools at my disposal; keep it varied and fun.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would teach the student puzzles or brain triggers for different parts of the story. That way, they have something they can associate with each part of the story, without memorizing its entire contents.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The Socratic method and encouraging the use of a dictionary are two of my favorite strategies.
