How can an IB Language B SL tutor help you?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) program focuses on global perspectives, multiculturalism, and diverse methods of learning. The program also requires that you become proficient in a foreign language before attaining an IB degree. In standard-level IB foreign language classes, you learn to speak conversantly, write convincingly, and think critically in a new language. Simply understanding basic grammar and vocabulary is not enough to pass the exam. Instead, you are challenged to demonstrate real fluency in the target language, as well as engage with the media, history, and traditions of the cultures that speak the language being studied.
Learning a language in enough detail to succeed in an IB Language B course and the exam is certainly a challenge, but it can be made unnecessarily difficult by approaching your studies alone. Even when working with study guides or classroom-based reviews, it may be difficult for you to receive enough personalized feedback on your skills to know where to focus your attention when preparing for your exam papers and course evaluations.
Instead of relying on impersonal resources, consider working one-on-one with a talented instructor. When learning a language, it helps to work under the guidance of a fluent speaker who can provide feedback on everything from your pronunciation to your essays. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with instructors who are professionals when it comes to providing the assistance you need to help your budding language skills blossom. The tutors are proven to be effective teachers and communicators.
Tutoring provides you with a series of unique benefits, and chief among them is an individualized learning environment. Classrooms are typically filled with numerous students. However, with private instruction, you are the only student in the environment. Thus, the instructor's attention is focused directly on you. Each lesson and activity will be tailor made for your academic needs. Tutoring also provides reliable and consistent instruction.
With a private instructor, you are able to continuously practice and develop your skills. Practicing with a tutor can be a valuable experience, one that provides immediate feedback. The learning environment is also free of distractions, as you are the only individual receiving the lessons and assistance. There are no time limits and tests. Thus, you can work at your own pace. You can review and learn new skills at a level that is best suited for you. The Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet with your tutor at the time and location of your choice.
Your tutor can design a series of lesson plans just for your IB Language B SL tutoring sessions, which can focus on helping you bolster your weakest skills, patch any gaps in your knowledge, and work toward achieving the well-rounded skill set that will be tested on your IB exams. Every tutoring session takes place in a one-on-one environment, giving you a wide variety of benefits. You can have your instructor's full attention throughout each and every session, and be free to spend as much or as little time on a concept as you need to fully understand it.
In addition, you can schedule your IB Language B SL tutoring to take place when and where it works best in your busy schedule, with online options available to make lessons as convenient as possible. Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
In today's class, I introduced some pairs of antonyms to the student, such as tall and short, big and small, hot and cold, etc. We also went over four seasons. We then studied his worksheet. It divided core vocabulary of level 1 into different categories, the grammar and sentence structure were also introduced. He again showed his talent in learning Chinese, I truly enjoyed working with him.
We started working on his new unit vocabulary, body parts. He wrote all the characters with their pinyin and English translations. He wrote the pinyin to dictation and did really well writing the sounds he heard. He then translated the song "heads, shoulders, knees, and toes" into Chinese, and we practiced singing it.
During today's class we reviewed the numbers, the shapes and the colors we learned before by games. He did a great job! The new sentences I taught today was quite challenging e.g. "please use yellow (marker) to draw a square; please use blue to draw 5 triangles; please use pink to draw 8 octagons; and etc." In this sentence, we included the new word "to use", the colors, the numbers and the shapes he knew. He was able to understand and also to say them at the same time. The new phrases we added for this class were "this morning, tomorrow morning and yesterday morning". Due to the limited time in class, we didn't get to practice them in conversation. This will be what we're doing at the beginning of next class.
I quizzed him on the things we reviewed last week. I also taught him some conversational Chinese, like "my name is ____" etc. Once again, he memorized everything quickly and I love that he is interested in learning Chinese.
Today we focused on writing Chinese characters in the whole session. I gave the students their names in Chinese and I taught each of them to write and practice the strokes of their name. We also practiced writing the I and be, together students learned to write a whole sentence of I am, which also helped them to recap the previous Chinese speaking knowledge. Student one picked up the writing and sentence very fast. Student two learned the writing fast and made some progress in writing characters.
The student and I did a very big review of the material she had learned over the past 1.5 years. We tried to consolidate her vocabulary from cassette tapes, flashcards, and notes into categories. We also worked on pronunciation and tried to converse in Mandarin as well. She took to the conversation after a little bit of prompting.
