I didn't get into Yale because I'm naturally smart. I'm not that guy that can just look at a problem on the board and just figure it out in seconds. I hate asking that guy for help because he doesn't know how to explain somethinghe just gets it right away. He's never sat down and broken it down. I never was that guy and I will never be that guy.
I will always be that guy that stays after class to asks questions because I didn't get it right away. I will always be that guy that is in office hours from start to end until I get it right. My whole life I have always been the guy on the other side of the table. I am the guy who always gets tutored, and that is why I make a great tutor. I know how people want to be helped, I've been there. I love tutoring people in anything: college essays, algebra, linear algebra, calculusanything I have ever loved to do. Tutoring has taught me empathy and patience. Two vital components that a great tutor has. I am hard working and I love seeing others succeed.
I will able to tutor for most of this summer, so about from the end of May to mid-August. I am on break and would love to tutor. I will be able to tutor for about 20 hours a weekor more, depending on what comes up this summerpreferably during the day but if evenings are prioritized then I can work evenings as well.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will help a student stay motivated by reminding them that persistence is key. I might throw in a personal anecdote of a time where I was losing motivation but decided to keep powering through. Reminding them to stay motivated is a major key to success.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

The two most important traits are empathy and patience. Remaining patient and trying to find alternative ways to explain the skill or concept will be of first priority.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Breaking down the questions to their core parts. My high school teachers taught me that if you can't find the answer in the passage, it is best to just reread patiently and break down the entire passage.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategies that I have found to be most successful when I start working with a student is developing a friendship with the student and having patience.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Finding different methods and approaches to alter my teaching style. Anything can be exciting; it is just about the approach one takes. Learning is more than just pencil to paper. It is about engaging the mind, and we are all engaged in different ways.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Repetition. Especially with STEM subjects such as mathematics, repetition is the best way to ensure that a student truly grasps the material. If they can do a certain problem that tests a certain concept, then they should be able to do other similar problems.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence in a subject by rewarding their foundation of the subject. With intimidating subjects such as calculus, which builds off of previous mathematical subjects, it is important to establish a solid foundation. By rewarding students on their foundations, they will develop the confidence to approach challenging subjects head on.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by attempting numerous styles of teaching until I pinpoint the style that works best with each individual student.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that everyone has the potential to learn and grasp anything with perseverance, patience, and a hard work ethic.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

在典型的首次与一个学生会议,我会的first like to get know them and ask them what they want to get out of these tutoring sessions. I will then be able to map out a potential game-plan so that I can achieve the student's goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by invoking a sense motivation and perseverance within the student. I will also invite them to attempt certain practice problems on their own so that they can see their own progress on their own time.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The first step to evaluating a student's needs is to honestly ask, during the first sessions, what they expect to get out of tutoring. By doing so I will be able to map out a potential game-plan for what the goals are for each session, and use that as the benchmark to help me evaluate a student's needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials that I typically use during a tutoring session are videos that I find worthy online and my own example problems with step by step solutions. And for certain subjects where visualization is key, such as multivariable calculus, certain 3D graphs and diagrams are also important.
