Certified Tutor

My educational motto is: Every child can learn so present it in a way they enjoy learning!

I have been approved to tutor in the following subject areas: Elementary Math, Math, Reading, English, Phonics, Writing, Grammar and Mechanics, and College Essay.

I am passionate about helping students because I have seen the way peers, educators, administrators and counselors have humiliated and allowed bullying to take place because a child does not learn at the same rate or same way. I know that every child can learn the same material when it is presented in the child's learning style instead of the teachers teaching style. I want to show children that they do make a difference and they can overcome the obstacles in the area of academics.

My background of wanting to be an educator started when I was able to dream of a career. I always wanted to be a teacher and help children, but it wasn't until 5th grade that I decided I wanted to be a Special Education teacher. I received my degree from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. I majored in Special Education and minored in Elementary and Early Childhood. I currently teach in the field of Special Education and I am Highly Qualified in Elementary Education and Early Childhood .

My teaching career started as a General Education 4th grade teacher in a small community school. I only taught General Education for one year before becoming the Assistant Special Education Director and teacher of students from 3 to 21. The next position in my career was Director of Special Education and teacher, I was flying solo in a big world of a lot responsibilities for an inexperienced teacher.

The next career move was to a larger school system teaching Pre-k through second grade special education teacher, after school tutor and gifted talented local judge. I filled those assignments for two years and was given the opportunity to move to the high school as a resource teacher and transitional coordinator from secondary to post secondary!

I finally ended up at the school where I graduated from. This opportunity has been a nice home feeling because I went to school with or know a lot of the parents in which I teach. I have been at the school I am now for 3 years teaching the multi-disabilities class. My students range from 3 year olds to 20 year olds.

As my own child has grown and has became interested in sports he decided he wanted to play basketball. In order to allow him to be part of a team I knew I needed a school district closer to home, because I do not like driving on 2 lane highways after dark much less after a full day of teaching and the excitement that comes with watching your child play a game. So, I applied at the school in my home district which is the district I did my student teaching!

Roff is a small community school district with a total of 43 staff members and less than 400 students in Pre-K - 12th grade. My position is Special Education teacher for 5 hours a day and Severe/Profound teacher 1 hour a day.

The diversity in career opportunities has gave me the knowledge of working with children from gifted in talented to children with all types of disabilities! Working with this wide of a diversity has also gave me the opportunity to learn different techniques an approaches in teaching almost all types of student's.

My favorite subject to tutor is math. I love that you can use so many different approaches to teach the same concept and students can check their answer for an immediate response.

What is your teaching philosophy?

我的教学理念是,每个孩子都可以to learn, so as a teacher I present it in as many ways as necessary for the child!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My first session will be getting to know the student and seeing what their learning style is.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student has to have good self-esteem in order to be confident in taking the lead of learning! I will build self-esteem while helping the student discover what they already know.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Interact with the student and have the student call me out on mistakes I make on purpose!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would approach the concept in a different manner, and if needed reteach the concept using a totally different style.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would lessen the amount of reading and work with comprehension strategies that I have learned in working with students for 10 years.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategy I have found is to relate the concept being taught to something the student enjoys.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would engage the struggling student in the subject they are weak in by relating concepts to personal experiences.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

The technique I use the most is to have the student compare and contrast concepts and tell me how they would teach a younger person that same concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence by purposely making mistakes and allowing the student to point the mistake out to me, without them knowing I made the mistake on purpose

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs as they are working.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by relating the need to the student's personal experiences.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use writing utensils, paper, and any type of hands on objects that are within arm’s reach that will help the student make a connection between the problems at hand and what they already know.
