What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that students learn in an individual way. While it is important to get the correct answer, it is more important that they understand the process.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself and discuss areas where they feel that they could improve upon. Work with the student where they are at in the curriculum, and see if they need to review basics.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help the student by encouraging them to work in areas that they do not feel confident in. This will show them that they can succeed.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would try to keep the student focused on the positives of what they are accomplishing and staying positive in my interactions.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break down the skill or concept into terms that they understand, and go through the lesson at their pace.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would encourage the students to ask questions to aid in their comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that being focused on the student and working with them where they are at builds on their comprehension.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Showing a student that they are successful in that subject, even if it is small accomplishments, and then building on those areas and adding more.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Reviewing the information, asking questions related to the subject, and making sure that the information is understood before moving on.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By showing them that they can succeed. Encouragement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would evaluate the needs by having them demonstrate the subject. I would also ask where they feel that they need assistance.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I find where they need help and work with them. I stay flexible in working with them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Depending on the subject, I usually come in with a pad of paper, pencils, and anything else related to the subject. I also try to have the text that they are using. I work with them and their materials.
