What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that teaching to the whole child and developing rapport with students is the key to engaging them. I model my joy of learning and always encourage them to reach their full potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Talk to them about things they like and want they feel their strengths are. Show them. Find out what their biggest needs are and which way they learn the best!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving them the freedom to explore and allowing them to make mistakes, and encouraging them to grow through this philosophy.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By giving them interesting activities and using my rapport to build confidence in their abilities. I will make learning fun using games, music and even joking with my student to keep them focused.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Look for new ways to present the concept and practice until they get it!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Use previous knowledge and build vocabulary. Then use graphic organizers and many strategies like retelling and open- ended questioning with inferencing. Of course literal questions are needed too.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Build rapport, and find their strengths and incorporate them into our sessions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Show my own excitement for it, and make them feel relaxed and not worried about making mistakes.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Explain thoroughly what the materials are stating and what our goals are.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By praising them for every success they have. Scaffolding in little steps always helps.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By pre-testing them in the particular area that you want them to improve in. Also, have the right materials!

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By constantly informally assessing them, adjusting the materials, and reteaching when necessary.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Lessons I find on the internet, the student's own assignments, and practice materials I find for the topic.
