The brain is the most complicated organ in the body and a neurobiology course is going to demand that you understand it in detail. There are many concepts that are absolutely vital to success in the course, whether you need to be aware of the various areas of the brain and their roles or you are tasked with understanding the complications that can arise from injuries in various areas. There are no shortcuts to understanding such an enormously complicated structure.

Since shortcuts are not an option, an efficient approach to learning is absolutely essential. The amount of intricacy in the nervous system can overwhelm even the most talented students. Neurobiology is nearly impossible to learn without a thoughtful approach to organizing the large amount of information you're tasked with learning, as well as a focus on understanding the concepts and not simply memorizing facts to repeat on the exam. While this may seem daunting, given the vast amount of information that is crammed into the single course, you don't have to go it alone.

The student had a test on Thursday, so we spent out time reviewing the history of evolution (Darwin, Lamark, etc.) and doing some practice problems from a study guide given by the teacher. He understood the main concepts, but sometimes had to be coached along to give the specific details needed for an answer. However, he did well on the practical problem describing a mutating school of fish. Overall, with some review of vocal words and general concepts, he should do fine on his test.

We covered the student's Biology notes for this week in preparation for a Monday quiz. He seems to take notes well and covers and reviews his material. He is mostly concerned with details, so we are trying to point out things and prevent him from missing things moving forward.

The student did an extra credit assignment summarizing a Science Illustrated article on the Sign of the Whale research ship. Then we reviewed her cardiovascular system worksheet and everything for her quiz on that tomorrow. We will start reviewing for her final in the next week or so.

During our session, the student and I covered the basics of the human endocrine system. Our discussion involved identifying the relevant glands or regions of the brain and knowing which hormones that part secretes. Our time was focused around a packet that contained activities aimed at helping the student understand the endocrine system and the different types of feedback that exist. The student fared well overall and was productive.

During today's session, I met the student and his father and began by working to establish what the student needs from a tutor. We discussed his class load, his biology class, his teacher, his past performance in biology, and upcoming assignments and tests. From there, I established a plan to prepare him for his biology final. The first element of this plan was to go over previous tests that he had challenges with in order to determine areas that he needed to focus on. We managed to look at two tests during the session--the first dealt with bacteria and protista, and the second with botany. Along the way, I clarified concepts and pointed out areas where he would need to focus his study based on my previous experience with biology classes at the high school level. Overall, it was a very productive session.
