We spent the session reviewing and revising the student's practice timed essay for the non-fiction book Deadly Choices. She had completed the introduction and first body paragraph before our lesson, and we improved the writing and streamlined the thesis and supporting arguments. She wrote the second body paragraph in-session and we improved it in the same fashion before working on the conclusion together. I suggested that she include more detail from this book than she would from a novel, where it would be construed as 'plot summarizing'; in this case, her teacher has not read the book and some points of her essay were too vague to allow the reader to understand her argument fully. I gave her another practice prompt from this book to give her more practice. This assignment may take place on Wednesday, unless it is pushed back to next semester.

In order to gauge what needed to be reviewed, we went over a sample language arts multiple choice test. As we went through the questions, we reviewed general multiple choice test taking techniques and also focused on sentence revision. As far as sentence revision goes, we focused heavily on punctuation and usage, including fragment sentences, comma splices, run-on sentences, and semi-colons. The student seems quite comfortable with the format of the multiple choice test and caught on quickly. He doesn't seem to have a problem scoring at least 4 out of 5 of the questions right.

Today's session went well. The student and I focused on his reading comprehension questions for his English class. He is getting better at forming sentences using correct grammar. He is also getting better at explaining his answers. We also continued on with his vocabulary quiz and providing a paraphrased definition of the words provided in his lessons.

In this session, we worked on an essay assignment that the student had. He had to write about the most interesting aspect of the play thus far (till act II). He decided to focus on the relationship between the father, Orgon and Tartuffe and how Orgon was blindly obsessed with his friend. I made the student outline his essay into a 5 point paragraph, which helped plan which examples he was going to use. Overall, he did a good job with the essay.

We did a small sight word spelling test. She made 90%. We worked with a sounding out activity. We worked for a short time with beginning consonants then moved to beginning consonant blends. (Sh,sl,ch,th,wh,ph) we wrote a short story and she wrote a few sentences she made herself.

这个会议了。我很骄傲的学生. I wanted to get him writing in the least fear-inducing way possible, so I told him he had three minutes and he could write anything he wanted. He got nervous that he had to write a book and I told him to write the easiest words--cat, dog, and--and to just go from there. He did, and then I gave him 5 minutes and then 10 minutes and he rose to the challenge beautifully. At points he asked for more time, and he wrote more words. We spent a good 50 minutes just writing, and he underlined the words he was unsure of as he went along.
