What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students can learn. The job of the educator is to find a way that works for them!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Figure out the areas where the student is having an issue. Once found, work with the student to ensure and increase understanding for the subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Give the student strategies and concepts to assist them with developing the skills needed to learn independently.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Find and spark the student's interest. Work together to reach a common goal. Make learning fun!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try to find ways to relate the subject or topic to the student. Relate the content in ways that are familiar to the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Make students feel comfortable in making mistakes when reading. Next, take steps to break down words and explain the meanings of the words for understanding.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Making content as simple as possible for student understanding and comprehension.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Make the student feel comfortable with not knowing. Allow them to see that they can be successful in the subject when following strategies we discuss in tutoring sessions.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Test the student, use open ended questions, and have the student explain the material in detail.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Student success always increases confidence!!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I like to listen to the student to see where they feel they are having a hard time. I also like to look over assignments.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Figuring out the learning style of the student.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books, notes, and any material related to the subject.
