Certified Tutor

I have been working in the human services field for over 15 years as a therapist. I worked with children ranging from elementary school on through to the high school level with learning disabilities or hindered learning due to behavioral difficulties. My main areas of expertise and preferred areas of tutoring include elementary through middle school reading and math both with children who have learning disabilities and those who do not. On the college level I have been tutoring statistics for 3 years and have 10 years experience in assisting grad students with writing thesis papers and dissertations as well as guiding them on how to analyze data. I am also an intermediate user of STATA.

My oldest son is a freshman and is 15 years old. He has mild autism and has many difficulties academically with reading, writing, and math. Over the past 8 years I have been tutoring him in these subject areas as well as some of his peers in the same subject areas for the past 6-7 years. In addition, I have tutored my now 22 year old stepdaughter and two of her friends on the high school level in math, writing, and reading. My stepdaughter has mild autism, dyslexia, and learning disabilities and she has shown tremendous progress over the past 3-4 years. The students I have tutored over the years have shown significant progress under my instruction and I often get requests still for new students by word of mouth of the parents of my previous students. I love teaching and enjoy seeing students get excited about what he or she is learning.

My educational background includes obtaining a bachelor's degree from Penn State in human development, a master's degree in business from University of Phoenix and a master's degree in education curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix. I worked as a classroom aide on the middle and elementary school grade levels as well as special education and emotional support classrooms.

On a personal note, I am a stay at home mom now to 3 amazing boys ages 15, 13, & 7 and a beautiful little girl who is 3 years old. I have a beautiful 22 year old stepdaughter who is working full time and working towards a career in healthcare. I love spending time with kids and going on educational trips. I have been married for 7 years and we have 2 spoiled fur babies. I personally love music, singing, writing, spending time with my kiddos, taking mini road trips, exploring new things, photography, and playing board games.

Thank you for taking time to read my profile and I look forward to working with you and your child!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself, my background, and my experience and reassure my student that will do whatever I can to assist them. I will also reassure my student that I will continue to work with them until all their questions are answered and they understand what they need to do in the specific assignment. I will never allow a lesson or tutoring session end if the student does not feel comfortable with the material or the assignment. I want to make sure all of my students are completely informed and equipped with all the tools he or she needs to be successful.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I have a 12-year-old son with a very short attention span and mild high functioning autism. I need to come up with new, creative ways for him to understand and retain the information he is studying. I do the same thing with any student that I tutor. I try to come up with creative ways of teaching material to the student, with the intention of him or her being able to retain that information.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to break the ice by allowing my student and his or her parent (if not a college student) to ask questions about me, my hobbies, why I decided to tutor, etc., to allow them to get to know me. I also like to explain my expertise or experience with the subject to help my students feel comfortable with me, first and foremost, as their tutor.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I like to shift my teaching methods towards a more creative approach and make it relatable according to my students' interests and strengths.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I like to break down each part of the assignment before teaching in an "overall" method. Breaking down each section and going through it bit by bit helps students learn small amounts of material at a time and how it relates to later and previous sections of the assignment.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to use visual aids, as I have noticed most of my students that I have tutored are visual learners. It helps keep the student engaged and interested. Other materials will depend on the needs of the student AND the assignment.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to utilize a student's strengths when developing a strategy to assist them that will set him or her up for success, not failure.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

结束之前我会给我的学生的策略any tutoring session that he or she can take with them and utilize after the tutoring session has ended. I would encourage my students to use those strategies first and foremost, and then I would intervene and assist them further if they need it.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would attempt to find ways that I can relate that concept or skill to something the student is familiar with and enjoys. I have found this method to be useful in many different contexts, and it helps the student get excited about these difficult concepts.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I have developed many different approaches over the years depending on the student's grade level and whether or not he or she has any learning difficulties. I change my tone of my voice or my writing to fit the capabilities of the student I am tutoring. I also like to know the student's ability to learn so I can tailor the tutoring session to his or her capabilities. For those students that have learning difficulties or are having an exceptionally difficult time learning a specific concept, I will break down it down into smaller parts to help the student better understand what he or she is learning.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I like to ask basic questions about the subject and the assignment to see what he or she already knows. I will use that as a baseline and will adjust my tutoring session from there.
