I would introduce myself, my background, and my experience and reassure my student that will do whatever I can to assist them. I will also reassure my student that I will continue to work with them until all their questions are answered and they understand what they need to do in the specific assignment. I will never allow a lesson or tutoring session end if the student does not feel comfortable with the material or the assignment. I want to make sure all of my students are completely informed and equipped with all the tools he or she needs to be successful.

I have a 12-year-old son with a very short attention span and mild high functioning autism. I need to come up with new, creative ways for him to understand and retain the information he is studying. I do the same thing with any student that I tutor. I try to come up with creative ways of teaching material to the student, with the intention of him or her being able to retain that information.

I like to break the ice by allowing my student and his or her parent (if not a college student) to ask questions about me, my hobbies, why I decided to tutor, etc., to allow them to get to know me. I also like to explain my expertise or experience with the subject to help my students feel comfortable with me, first and foremost, as their tutor.

I like to shift my teaching methods towards a more creative approach and make it relatable according to my students' interests and strengths.

I like to break down each part of the assignment before teaching in an "overall" method. Breaking down each section and going through it bit by bit helps students learn small amounts of material at a time and how it relates to later and previous sections of the assignment.

I like to use visual aids, as I have noticed most of my students that I have tutored are visual learners. It helps keep the student engaged and interested. Other materials will depend on the needs of the student AND the assignment.

My teaching philosophy is to utilize a student's strengths when developing a strategy to assist them that will set him or her up for success, not failure.

I have developed many different approaches over the years depending on the student's grade level and whether or not he or she has any learning difficulties. I change my tone of my voice or my writing to fit the capabilities of the student I am tutoring. I also like to know the student's ability to learn so I can tailor the tutoring session to his or her capabilities. For those students that have learning difficulties or are having an exceptionally difficult time learning a specific concept, I will break down it down into smaller parts to help the student better understand what he or she is learning.

I like to ask basic questions about the subject and the assignment to see what he or she already knows. I will use that as a baseline and will adjust my tutoring session from there.
