Certified Tutor

Hi! My name is Rachel Kaplowitz Cantrell, and I am excited to be your tutor as a part of the elite Varsity Tutoring service. To our tutoring sessions, I bring my extensive teaching experience and English background, as well as a great passion for writing and literature! I received my bachelor's degree in English with a minor in education, along with a certification to teach 7-12th grade English, from Louisiana State University. I also received my Master's degree in English from Boston College and completed my Ph.D. coursework in English at the University of Memphis.

I have taught English at the college and high school levels; I am currently an English instructor at the University of Tulsa and Tulsa Community College, and I have taught English previously at the University of Memphis and Northside High School in Memphis, Tennessee. These varied experiences in teaching diverse student bodies give me expertise in educating students at different levels, from various backgrounds, and in all aspects of English instruction. I have taught college literature and composition and high school American literature, British literature, writing and grammar.
As you can probably see from my English career, I am very excited about English Language Arts, and it is my great joy and dedication to instruct students in the extremely important skills of writing, reading, analysis, and critical thinking. I always seek to engage students in their learning, to make it interesting and important to them, and help them take ownership of their education. I look forward to working with you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My ultimate goals as an educator are to provide high quality education for students from diverse backgrounds and to foster students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would view any assignments or projects upon which the student needs to focus, and I would administer a relevant assessment of the student's English skills, through a writing sample/diagnostic essay or reading activity.
