What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in an adaptive teaching method. I strongly believe that a student can master any subject matter so long as that information is presented in the right way. Thus, I believe in switching teaching techniques to best fit the individual student: drawing it out, using conceptual examples, going step-by-step, etc.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and state my background so that the student feels confident in my abilities. Then I would ask for more information on what/why the student is having problems in a certain area. I would look out for specific phrases in their response such as "I'm just too stupid to get it." This indicates a lack of confidence in their abilities and would require a more reassuring approach with step-by-step instruction.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe in having students work out problems on their own similar to what we have done together. This demonstrates to me what the student has learned from our session as well as demonstrates to the student that they are capable of understanding these concepts.
