Brendan

Certified Tutor

I am a current student at Marquette University. I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering and will be earning a bachelors as well as a masters degree in 5 years total. My focus on mechanical engineering and systems is due to my love of putting things together and drawing conclusions from physical representations. This was instilled at a young age as I had a deep love of Legos.

My favorite subject to tutor is algebra. Algebra features so many of the basic mathematical tools which become instinct in higher level math like calculus, my favorite subject to study.

I have a varied repertoire of subjects which I tutor as I do consider myself a renaissance man. I bring my bold and fresh teaching approach to all subjects and students. I have experience tutoring and/or taking coursework in all subjects listed. I have worked with students as young as middle school and as old as college.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session is the foundation for the wall of learning I plan to build in each following session. With this being said, I try to get to know the student very well in the first session. This includes getting to know the student's strengths and weaknesses academically but also the student's personal tastes. With the information from the first session, I am able to move forward with the student, achieving academic success while keeping sessions interesting. With a meaningful first session, the wall of learning is ready to be built!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I challenge my students to figure things out on their own. My students learn to figure things out on their own, gaining a deeper understanding of the topic.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

一个学生可能很难激励themselves if they look at only the final product or the goal. This makes the task at hand quite daunting. This is why I provide each of my students with a game plan, a number of topics and concepts that I will cover so that the ultimate goal is accomplished (A+, college credit on an AP exam, happiness and a positive self-image).
