Justin
Certified Tutor
My name is Justin Metz and I am excited to be a part of the tutoring staff at Varisty Tutors! I graduated with Honors from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in 2013 where I double majored in Government and History. I was also a captain of the varsity wrestling team. After graduation, I worked as a Senior Analyst at the Analysis Group, an economic and financial consulting firm headquartered in Boston. I will be attending NYU law school in the fall.
While in college I was extensively involved in the Wesleyan Writing Program as a tutor and adviser to the director of the writing program. After a semester long training program, I tutored all levels of students from ESL to honors thesis writers. Each semester I worked extensively with four or five students with whom I met weekly. In addition I held weekly office hours where I helped students with everything from outlining or brainstorming papers to resumes and cover letters. While at the Analysis Group, I designed and taught training classes in Excel, VBA, and SAS. In addition, I have been involved with the Boston Youth Wrestling Program - a wrestling program for inner city youth - where I served as an assistant coach.
I have extensive experience with a variety of different standardized tests including the ACT and LSAT (both of which I received a score in the 99th percentile) as well as the GRE and many AP exams. I am confident I can teach strategies to demystify and conquer these tests! I am comfortable tutoring all ages of student and am proficient in most subjects, especially History, English and Social studies.
When I'm not tutoring, you can find me outside! I love skiing, hiking, and camping and I am an avid baseball fan.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe in working with students to set a series of attainable small goals, thereby boosting confidence and understanding of the subject matter in a non-intimidating way. I believe in building these small goals on one another to achieve what may have previously seemed like an unattainable large goal.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to get a sense of what the student is working on, how they approach studying and what they believe are their strengths, as well as their weaknesses. I like to set small goals with the student and prepare a plan of attack!
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I like to set small, attainable goals. As students achieve these goals they naturally gain confidence. I believe the quote "success is the sum of small efforts repeated daily" applies well to tutoring. By setting small, attainable goals students can build confidence while building towards larger successes.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
为测试准备, especially graduate test prep, I try and use only real or very good simulations of real questions. In order to attack these questions, I enjoy collecting strategies from different test prep companies and presenting them to the student. Different strategies work for different students, so I like to present as many good strategies as I can.
