I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that any child or person can learn; it’s a matter of finding what works or ignites the spark in them!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I like to establish a base of what the student knows, where the student wants to be and what way the student learns the best.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The key to helping a student become an independent learner is to help them find what motivates them through a subject that they find interesting.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To help a student stay motivated, a student needs to be encouraged when it gets hard or frustrating to do the work. I will help them look back and see what they accomplished, and have confidence in that, which leads to a better motivation for the student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill, the first step is to break it down. Once you break down a concept or skill for a student and then build upon it, it can be easier to find those patterns and concepts in other hard skills and concepts.
