Currently, I am in my third year of chiropractic school moving on to my clinical rotation. I have strived to learn as much as possible throughout my education and while doing so I learned how to help others along the way. I have been a tutor for multiple science courses for the past two years (neuroscience, pathology, anatomy, biochem, etc.) and have centered my teaching style based on the students. To me, tutoring is more than reading information or answering questions on a topic. It's about providing the most tools to give a better understanding of the material so you are prepared for any questions that may come about. In life, my goal is to have a career where I can make a difference in people's lives as a healthcare professional. However, tutoring to me is just as rewarding by helping those in need to the best of my ability by utilizing all the knowledge I have learned along with providing resources for additional help. I look forward to making a difference.
My tutoring style is much different from others. I put students on the spot to assess their understanding of topics while helping them retain the information with quizzing them. In addition, I focus on the individual's learning style to enhance the efficiency of the session. I provide visual aides, tips for creating flash cards, auditory talk through topics, and most importantly I listen to the individual. Like a healthcare professional listens to their patients, I listen to what the student is struggling with and from their I come up with the best plan to solve that problem. Helping people succeed starts with finding out the source of the problem.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is simple. It focuses on listening to the student and figuring out where the problem is. So many tutors teach everyone the same way, but I look at each student as an individual and from there I come up with the best way to teach them the material.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
A typical first session involves getting to know the student. I think it is important to develop a relationship so I can figure out the best way to communicate the material. It is important to learn what the individual is struggling with within the course and work from there. I am also always prepared to dive right into the material.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
My tutoring style does just this. I make sure that the student has a full understanding of concepts rather than memorizing word associations. I like to put the student on the spot to learn what the student truly understands during the session. I provide additional information on material I have learned to give a better understanding of concepts as well.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I think something so many of us forget is that we can all relate. School does get discouraging and hard at times. However, showing someone that you know what they’re going through also shows that they can overcome it. I love to relate to my students and help them learn to love a subject they previously disliked. It is very rewarding, and an individual's mindset is everything.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I personally am not the best reader. I am very slow, but I have learned how to work around it. The key to reading comprehension is taking breaks! So many of us just try to power through material, but this is where we go wrong. It makes such a difference to break up what you are reading into smaller sections, and I promise you will do half the work and retain more.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have learned to adapt to my students. I do not tutor everyone the same. I ask the students how they learn best and then mold myself around them. They are my focus, and by doing so it has truly been successful.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
This is often a struggle for many of us. It is natural to dislike something we aren't good at. However, by showing students material from a different aspect and most importantly teaching them how the material is relevant to them, it makes a huge difference. Many of us try to treat subjects as "irrelevant" and that we don't need to know them, however, I make sure to enlighten my students on how the material applies to their lives.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I always incorporate quizzing my students to see what they grasp from the material. It also helps them retain it. I have also had students explain concepts to me, and that gives me the ability to tweak any parts that are not completely understood. In the end, the more the student participates, the more they will learn.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Building confidence is easy! As a tutor, it is crucial to have a positive attitude and utilize positive reinforcements. Regardless of how little a student may know regarding a subject, the part to take out of it is that they do in fact know material. Focus on the positive and build up their knowledge base.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate the student's needs by talking to them regarding the subject. So many people are different, and breaking down the points they are having difficulty with is crucial. It could be the way they study, the way the teacher is teaching, or just a complex concept of the material. It is my responsibility to figure out the problem and work with it.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I love to use my own materials that I have required from all of the courses I have taken over the years. I also provide additional resources for the students as well. I truly believe there are never too many resources and that the student can decide what is most helpful.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
My tutoring style is all about adapting to the needs of the student. I take how they learn and apply it to my teaching style.
