Molly

Certified Tutor

I am an Illinois native, but have spent time in Iowa and Missouri over the past 5 years. I have a BS degree in Health Sciences from Drake University and am currently working towards my Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of Missouri. I am a lover of math and sciences, but have a soft spot for history and English. Over the course of my education, I have taken a plethora of classes that allows me to be able to give back to individuals that are struggling with different material. I needed extra help in high school to grasp the concepts presented in physics and understand the importance of having a great tutor.

I really enjoy working with new people and learning what type of learner they may be. If I were to classify what type of learner I am, I would be a kinesthetic learner, meaning I need to do it myself to be able to fully understand the material. As a tutor, with Varsity Tutors, I adapt the subject material to fit the learning style of my student. I think it's incredibly important to utilize the strengths of the student to help them better grasp the material. Prior to college, I tutored in Trigonometry and in college I tutored chemistry. The most exciting aspect of this job, for me, is the excitement a student shows when they finally grasp the material.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I adapt the material to utilize the type of learner a student may be. For example, if a student is an auditory learner, we will work aloud so the student is able to hear the information before answering and while answering the question. This way we can talk out the problem areas and work through the question step by step.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I want to see where a student is sitting with the material. I may ask them to answer 3 questions of their assignment to see where the struggle. I will then follow-up with a question about what frustrates or challenges them in this course so we can find techniques that will help overcome the challenges together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By helping them to answer their own question, with the information they know. Not simply providing them an answer in order to move on to the next topic.
