I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

Currently, I am an honors student at UNLV. I'm pursuing a major in biology and a minor in journalism. To give you an idea of what I can bring to the table, here is some of my background: In my four years of being a part of the Speech and Debate team, I have been assistant coach for two of those years. That experience allowed me to greatly expand my abilities as a mentor, as I had a lot of students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles under my wing. My years on this team have helped me harness and advance my skills in writing, editing, composing and creating any sort of composition (essays, cases, etc). I also geared my focuses to the sciences, as I was a part of science competitions such as Science Olympiad. My love for medicine is primarily what prompted me to pursue a degree in that field.
One thing I enjoy more than learning is teaching. I am a firm believer in the idea that being able to teach someone else material exemplifies that you yourself have become master of that material. Because of that belief, I incorporate that idea in my teaching style. My philosophy not only revolves around ensuring my students can understand and develop the ability to explain the subjects they are studying, but it revolves around the student's interests as well. If the student is interested in what they are learning, it will be an easier and more enjoyable experience for them. Also, by providing them with real world examples, they can understand the relevance of their studies, which is just as important.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Part of my teaching process includes providing students with real-world examples of the concepts they are learning. That way, they'll be able to conceptualize the knowledge and understand the material enough to apply it.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would spend some time just talking to the student in order to figure out what kind of teaching style would be most effective for their learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I encourage my students to participate actively in the tutoring session, not just listen to what I say. That way, they are able to conceptualize the material and apply it with their own thinking. I also provide several suggestions for how to approach a problem, allowing flexibility for their learning.
