I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Jacob

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and Music in the spring of 2015. Since graduation, I have participated in science research internships while also preparing to take the GRE and attend a doctoral program in the biological sciences. In the summer of 2015, I participated in behavioral research on chimpanzees, and am now assisting with the skeletal archives at the American Museum of Natural History. I have had experience teaching as a peer mentor for college students in Introductory Biology, as a camp counselor at the Central Park Zoo, and as a tap dance instructor.

My academic strengths are science, social sciences, music, and SAT preparation. I loved my time in primary and secondary school and hope to instill my excitement for learning into my tutees. While sometimes tests (both standardized and otherwise) can be tricky and decrease students' faith in themselves, I am certain that, with a little confidence boost, any student can make great strides with their coursework. As a teacher, I offer patience, humor, and brevity. I have enjoyed the time I've spent getting students to become engaged, excited, and proud of their knowledge. I look forward to giving my tutees this "confidence boost."

What is your teaching philosophy?

As an educator, my philosophy is that simpler is better. If a concept can be reduced to its most crucial elements, doing so is critical for allowing all students to understand the material. I also try to individualize my teaching in order to incorporate the interests of students into the work that they are trying to accomplish.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I will talk to the student about their previous standardized test experiences. If they have previous scores, I like to go over their reports with them to see what we should focus on in subsequent sessions. I also have a few problems I always like to start out with, as I think they best show how the math section's problems can be solved using different techniques, how the writing section requires careful reading, and how the reading section can be tackled by thinking about which answers best adhere to the passage's core themes.
