Certified Tutor

My philosophy in teaching is based on the fundamental principle that it's okay to not know-- we learn through our mistakes and I will be cheering you on, never punish you for learning.

My grandmother was a wonderful teacher who helped me re-learn Chinese when I moved back from Japan to China. Because my grandma served as a mentor who believed that 'I can do it', I remained confident and went from bottom of class to top. Ultimately, we will not only work on your weakness, but also develop mental and physical toughness.

Tutoring experience:
spent 2 years in college tutoring pre-meds in Organic chemistry, and student athletes in Physics, Biology, and Chinese. Upon graduation, I spent 1 year tutoring elementary students in math. I felt a sense of accomplishment when my student improve over the course of tutoring, and I felt extremely appreciated when I receive positive feedbacks from the students. I'm extremely motivated to help you succeed

What is your teaching philosophy?

1 Engage students personally.

2 Do questions together.

3 Repeat #2. Practice makes perfect!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student's learning style, goals for tutoring, and current level.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would give students a few minutes to do the question by themselves. This allows them to think independently before I say anything. After the students have attempted to solve the problems on their own, I will then guide them based on my approach to solving the problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I reach out to the student periodically through email, and I ask the student about their school life. I continue to encourage students.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would provide visual examples or more sample questions to illustrate the concept. I will then have the student re-explain the concept back to me.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Doing questions together.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Motivate them by encouraging them that they can succeed.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use lots of example questions, visual images, graphs, and charts.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I tell my students to write, in big, capitalized letters, "CONFIDENCE" on top of their paper before they start doing questions.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By looking over the student's exam scores and analyzing how they do problems.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use a question book, as well as the student's course book and syllabus.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would have the students read and summarize each paragraph in a brief sentence for me.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If I notice a student is a visual learner, I will use more visual supplies in my tutoring session. If I notice a student is more of an auditory learner, I will assign videos for homework to reinforce a concept.
