Certified Tutor

I am currently prepare for an international rowing competition. I am also in the midst of doctoral work at the University of Washington having transferred from the University of Oregon where my research interests were in experimental and behavioral economics, interdisciplinary fields that draw on knowledge from both economics and psychology. Prior to enrolling at UO, I attended the University of Puget Sound (UPS) where I studied mathematics, computer science, and economics and graduated magna cum laude. Currently I am pursuing field work in econometrics and international macroeconomics. I have been awarded my master's degree and am currently working on my dissertation.

I am experienced and comfortable in positions of leadership, responsibility, and education. I have worked for four years as a rowing coach for adults and high school athletes. I have worked for seven years as a tutor in mathematics, computer science, and economics and three years as a teaching assistant in economics for undergraduate courses. Currently, I am training for the United States Rowing Team having recently finished fifth place at the US Olympic Trials.

I have developed skills that permit me to effectively communicate my ideas and intentions to others. During my time as an undergraduate, I was a member of the Otis Coolidge Chapman Honors Program, an academic program that places an emphasis on writing skills across the disciplines. I have two published papers and a number of works in progress with professors and professional colleagues at Puget Sound, U of Washington, and Russell Investment Group.

Recently, I worked part-time as a rowing coach for Holy Names Academy, an all-girls Catholic school, where I helped young women develop their abilities as nationally competitive athletes. I continue to work with the HNA rowing team on a seasonal basis.

I work with students from a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities, from middle school pre-algebra to advanced undergraduate and MBA students of analysis, computer science, and statistics.

我有很强的计算机技能和编程background in JAVA, R, and MATLAB. I have used STATA, Eviews, and MiniTab for statistical projects. I also have advanced training required to fluently use Office Spreadsheet, Writing, and Presentation programs. With my strong quantitative background, I can quickly learn and use new programming languages and software packages. I have worked in teams as part of the Mathematical Competition in Modeling (MCM) for three years as an undergraduate and in two of those years have been awarded the rank of Outstanding (2007) and Meritorious (2008). In the 2008 MCM, my team was also given the Ben Fusaro award for an exemplary exposition of our solution.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone looking for an education wants to succeed, and it is seeing that success, in small and measurable quantities, that motivates us to work harder. I aim to help students have measurable success in their studies so that they can remain excited about their learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I always start by learning as much as I can about the student's background - how they have done in other, similar classes in the past. I also aim to learn about why they are taking the class and their motivation for learning the subject.
