Kathy

Certified Tutor

I am a PhD student of Kansas State University. I received my Bachelor of Geography Education and English Literature in China. Since graduation, I have worked at Liuzhou Teachers' College for a while. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and that which enriches my life: dancing, running, baking and cooking.

For Tutoring Chinese (Mandarin): I design specific curriculum and syllabus for different language purposes on political, commercial, cultural, and historical needs. I am very good at using technology in my teaching methods, such as to mix online teaching with traditional ways of teaching so as to seek optimal teaching result. To ensure the targeted language levels, I obtained the Mandarin Chinese Language Proficiency Tester certificate in 2008. Then periodically administer check ups and testings by myself to get students' proficiency reports. I can adjust my teaching materials and methods to fit your language needs. I am looking forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your goals.

For tutoring Geography: I enjoy helping students to create the self-confidence of study. I help them to build a unique way to learn Geography, to think spatially for every student on a purpose of understandable and efficient. I help students understand the key theories to help get the ideas to solve problems. I give practice only when needed. Sharing my knowledge with students to enhance their desire to learn is the key of my classes. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams. I am a firm proponent of education and tutoring, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everything is possible.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know each other, and set goals for the study.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach them what to study and how to study.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Use your passion to guide them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Encourage them nicely and be patient; tell them everything is possible.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Share my experience, and show a patient heart: practice makes perfect. All they need is practice.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Be nice to students; no one enjoys a mean teacher.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Show the potential use and the importance of this subject. How valuable it is to put in effort to study this subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Different ways: visual, interactive, listening, kinesthetic, etc.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Praise them periodically. Use some stories and mottos.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Have a heart to heart conversation to get to know better when to know what they need and how to go about helping them in different ways.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would fit in materials they need, and view it from their standpoint.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Slides.
