What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to help students maximize their natural potential. I believe in adapting to each learning style and opening doors of opportunity so that ultimately students will have greater confidence, knowledge and expectations regarding their academic success!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Learn about the student including but not limited to his/her needs and concerns, his/her expectations and goals, his/her areas of difficulty in the past or present time, and assess how organized he/she is (or is not) and what materials he/she has available and is willing to use in order to reach his/her goals. I also like to genuinely get to know my students. It is very important to me to relate to them, as it helps me modify my teaching style based on their personality.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I like to play the role of the student. I provide the traditional tutoring experience, followed by revealing places to find great resources and tips of how I have been successful in the corresponding subject area. I then like to have the students explain back to me how to successfully complete a problem, as well as explain why correct answers are correct and why incorrect answers are incorrect. Teaching makes the best learning!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Using a variety of resources and sharing personal stories of times when I have overcome challenges in similar subject areas. Additionally, I make it a point to find each student's strength, regardless of what that may be, and coach them on how to use that strength to excel in areas where they may have weaker performances.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would teach it a different way until the student was receptive. Sometimes, I will even postpone a topic so that I can learn a new way to tackle a skill or concept, and then try again until something clicks for that particular student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would suggest they read something about a topic of interest and read as much as possible. Once that becomes more comfortable, then we can apply that confidence to other material.
