How can Croatian and Serbian language tutoring help you succeed?

The Croatian and Serbian language, which is spoken in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, can present myriad linguistic obstacles to anyone wishing to become fluent in it. Students who grew up speaking, reading, and writing English may be initially flummoxed to see letters in Croatian or Serbian words that they do not recognize. This is because Croatian and Serbian use a thirty-character alphabet, requiring you to familiarize yourself with the new letters before starting to learn words. Additionally, Croatian and Serbian grammar presents numerous idiosyncrasies to be mastered.

Finding instruction in Croatian or Serbian that clicks with the way in which you learn can present an additional obstacle to your language-learning goals. Group classes may not offer you enough one-on-one attention to have all of your questions answered, textbooks are impersonal and can't help you pinpoint exactly what features of Croatian or Serbian you need to work on, and online resources may be unreliable and take a great deal of time to vet and organize into coherent lessons. And even then, how are you supposed to work on your conversational skills? Varsity Tutors helps students connect with one-on-one Croatian and Serbian tutoring all over the United States. Our educational directors work with you to create a full student profile that allows potential tutors to begin preparing their basis for a study plan for you. They can view details such as your learning style, your curriculum, proficiency levels, past testing scores, and more to assess their ability to help you.

The student has passed all but one of her exams so we are focusing all of our time on that portion, Reading. She needs to take the time to read both the passages and the questions thoroughly. She misses about 25% of the questions in the first go and can usually correct her answers when her error is pointed out.

Today we started working on the student's project for Mandarin. His assignment is to create a school that is unique and use the vocabulary from lesson 6 to describe the school by location, as well as what is unique about the school. Most of today was spent on creating a blueprint of the map, as well as going over what the mission of the school was and what set it apart from all the others. Our next session will be focused on writing the paragraphs and translating sentences from English to Mandarin.

The student's final was the following day, so I gave him a "mock" exam. It included English-to-Chinese translation, Chinese-to-English translation, multiple-choice questions on a reading passage, fill-in-the-blank, ordering sentences and writing a letter. We graded the exam, and I encouraged him to focus on the topics with which he struggled.

We finished the lesson on family by learning and speaking a new dialog about two children showing each other photos of their families and sharing how they feel about their families. There was a mid-term review at the end of this chapter, and I gave this review as homework for the student over the weekend. We also went over the instructions for each of the activities.

Today, we reviewed previous vocabulary/grammar/conversations and added some new vocabulary about animals. The student is very curious and had a lot of questions about Chinese characters and wanted to know about complicated grammar points, such as measure words. They were difficult concepts for her to grasp but she got them. We are able to hold conversations with five to six "turns" (one turn = I say something and she responds), which is great! We'll meet again in two weeks and talk about the Chinese New Year. She will prepare for this by reading some books about it.

In this meeting, we reviewed the terms for animals and talked about the names of fruit in Chinese. Given the benefits of introducing multiple linguistic input, I may give my students a try by introducing pinyin next class.
