What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that every student can reach their personal potential. In order to do so, both student and educator must communicate with each other to use the student's strengths to overcome any challenges the student may face.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I always like to learn about the student's goals, interests, strengths, and challenges. This helps me customize lesson plans accordingly. I also like to share some of my interests and goals in order to begin gaining trust from my student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I like teaching students study methods they can use across all disciplines. My favorite study method is metacognition, in which I teach the student to explain to themselves how to arrive at the answer. This helps in reading comprehension, math concepts, and writing.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Concepts will be introduced within a context that the student is familiar with. For example, presenting a new math concept through basketball. Additionally, positive encouragement will be provided to ensure the student is making progress.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When a student is experiencing difficulty, I tell them it's okay. I will present the content in various ways that cater to the student's strengths (visual, auditory, spatial etc.).

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

They key to improve reading comprehension is to build their background knowledge. I like to help students relate their own experiences to the content of the reading passages.
