What is your teaching philosophy?

I strive to meet my students on their level and with the modality that works best for them; whether they are visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. Patience and persistence are of the utmost importance when trying to tutor a struggling math student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Getting to know the student and building a relationship are important during the first session. After meeting, a diagnostic should be done to see where the student is and what holes the student may have in their mathematical background.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By encouraging the student to practice until they are capable of mastery without assistance and to be inquisitive in their quest for knowledge.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It is important to try to make curriculum relative to a student's life. There are many instances where it is possible to tie mathematical concepts into the everyday life of a student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Take a break and move on to a more comfortable concept that builds up to the concept that the student is having difficulty with. Then, revisit the difficult concept once the anxiety of "not getting it" subsides.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Slow down the annunciation of the vocabulary and show them how to use text clues and the importance of context while reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Giving the student the option of finding the answer in their own way, so that they can take ownership of their learning.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By finding a way to tie the subject matter into their lives.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Exit quizzes, having the student explain verbally how the concept works, or by asking an enrichment question to find out if the student could understand the deeper meaning/importance of the concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Praise for correct responses, and encouraging words when they are struggling. Also, by starting out with easy questions that the student will get correct.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By knowing how your student works through concepts and where his/her mistakes occur, a teacher is able to get a feel for what a student needs to be successful.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Differentiation of material/assignments, chunking the material or breaking it down into smaller parts, and through the use of visual aids or manipulatives.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to use graphic organizers, manipulatives, and mnemonics to help students grasp concepts when I am able.
