What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that everyone is capable of learning. The trick is finding the way the student learns best, and building on that.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I would tell the student about myself, and then ask the student about themselves. I would ask what is frustrating them most about school, and ask where they want to start.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Helping the student find the best way for them to learn is the best way to help them become an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Setting goals and always keeping them in sight is a great motivator.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student is having difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would look for a different approach or method of teaching it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading out loud or in a very quiet place are 2 ways to help with reading comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Addressing the student's frustrations is very helpful when starting to work with a student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would work hard to find the practical uses for the subject they're struggling with.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Quizzing and flashcards are helpful ways to be sure a student is understanding the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Success builds a student's confidence. Doing well on flashcards and quizzes are both positives.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Observing the student work, and their homework are good indicators of the student's needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Adapting to the student's learning style is the best way to achieve positive results.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Using the textbook, any teacher-given study materials and class notes is a great place to start a tutoring session.
