I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My objectives are to help students become linguistically and socially competent, so that they become confident speakers, effective writers, careful readers and attentive listeners. In supporting my student's learning, my lessons move from controlled production to more free, allowing the student more independence as they begin to master new concepts. I follow the general principle of " I +1" and introduce information that is slightly above the student's current competency level. Thematic units are culturally relevant, using real information and emphasizing the student's interest and their choices. Student-centered lessons, rather than teacher-centered lessons, is the rule. Language learning is not linear, so lessons may be cyclical in nature, offering more complex looks into revisited subjects. When I'm designing a unit plan or instructing, my lessons are in the sequence of A.R.P.E.E. (Anticipation, Reception, Production, Extension, Evaluation). Finally, I agree with the top linguists in the field today that students acquire language best when the atmosphere is relaxed, fun, engaging and positive!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I first like to assess what their reasons for language learning are (social, academic, etc.) and what their long-term goals are. I take time to get to know them, especially their interests and hobbies and learning styles. I will generally assess their language proficiency level in the first session, and then discuss what can be expected in future sessions. We will also plunge right into the material on the first day.
