What is your teaching philosophy?

所有的学生都有学习的能力,所以茶llenge, as a teacher or tutor, is to understand how the student learns best. Utilizing that learning style, I desire to encourage the student and provide opportunities for the student to succeed. Beyond the current learning style, I believe it is important to equip the student with skills to learn in any classroom environment which they may encounter. Critical thinking skills are equally important to prepare the student for both classroom success and life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would first work at getting to know the students by asking questions about what they enjoy and what frustrates them. I would then apply those questions to school situations. I would work through some homework problems with the student, so I could begin to assess how they think and what difficulties they face with the subject matter.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Helping a student build skills in critical thinking, note taking, and reading comprehension will assist the student in becoming more independent in the learning process.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Small successes and curiosity both build motivation. I would provide opportunities for the student to build successes in small steps, while also helping the student become curious about the world around us.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First, I would help the student identify the stumbling block. Second, I would work to explain the concept in a different way or attempt a different approach that might be more understandable to the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

To improve reading comprehension, I teach students how to ask themselves questions as they read in order to identify main points or follow the action of a story. Often, poor vocabulary compounds the problem of reading comprehension, so pre-teaching vocabulary would be another step.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Lots of encouragement to the student and helping them understand the skills they have can help boost confidence and motivation. Caring for the student and showing them that I care about them as a person builds the relationship. A positive relationship with the student sets a better atmosphere for learning.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would look for something in what we are studying that would pique the interest of the student. I would look for ways to have the student have a "hands on" experience with the subject matter.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use numerous "checks for understanding" throughout my teaching and tutoring times. I believe it is important to check frequently, so if this student misses a portion of the material, reteaching can occur immediately.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student's confidence is built when they start seeing small successes. Therefore, I can help a student become more confident by providing instruction and practice that leads to success one step at a time.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Observing a student and interacting with the student's parents and teacher, when possible, provides valuable information for evaluation. Assessments completed by the student are also useful to evaluate different areas of need.

你如何适应辅导学生的不eds?

I believe it is important to help a student in the areas that they feel they need and not necessarily what I feel they need. I will work to help a student express what their needs are to succeed in learning and will strive to help them in that area.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper! I find that as I talk, I prefer to write and demonstrate. I feel that it helps the student to see, as well as hear, explanations. I also bring worksheets that provide practice and test prep books to provide additional practice.
