What is your teaching philosophy?

I feel strongly that anyone can learn. It is an educator's job to relate the material to the student. The student's job is to be open to receiving the information. I believe learning should be fun and easy to understand. I work with individuals to ensure they're successful at their own pace and own goal level.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student first and come up with an action plan for successful tutoring sessions. I would help the student to realize that understanding material happens over time.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help the student do things on their own. When a student is able to do things on their own, they will, over time, begin to understand how to successfully write, read and etc., when the tutor is not there.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would encourage a student every step of the way, and remind them of the reasons they wanted/needed a tutor in the first place.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would review with the student in different ways, according to their strengths.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would advise the student to read out loud with me. After a small paragraph, I then would ask them to explain what happened in the story.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found encouragement and self fulfilling statements to be a positive way to teach. It seems when people think they can do it, they can!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would tell them to let go of all negative feelings of the subject. I would then let them know that I too struggled in subjects at school. I would let them know the key to success is practice.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have the student repeat back to me the steps/procedure of what was learned. Basically I would have the student teach me. When the student is able to teach or explain work, they are most likely ready to move on.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I encourage and motivate students with positive words and self fulfilling prophesies.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask the student what they need help with, and then follow up with a basic skills assessment.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I talk to the student in the initial interview and try to determine what type of learner they may be. From there, I am able to plan curriculum for auditory, visual, kinetic, etc., learner types.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use visual aides, music, whiteboard, text and animation.
