My name is Max - I'm a senior at Yale College where I study Economics. I'm originally from Millburn, NJ.
This year, I'm taking two semesters off from school to sing and travel the entire world with the Yale Whiffenpoofs, America's oldest collegiate a cappella singing group.

Apart from singing, I'm is passionate about education, particularly in helping high school students achieve their academic goals as they work their way towards college. I volunteer in New Haven as a math teacher and coach at a public middle school (my team of 7th graders just won the 2016 New Haven regional championship!), and I've been tutoring middle and high school students for over 7 years.

On top of all of that, I'm an aspiring professional in the business world - this past summer I worked at an internship in financial consulting (banking advisory & analytics), and have previously held internship positions in human capital consulting & private equity, as well as in patent law.

My interests are widely varied and eclectic - pro baseball (Go Mets!), Broadway theater, American public policy & politics, global affairs, and public economics.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe strongly in developing conceptual understanding before procedural mastery. There's nothing more satisfying for a student than getting a concept, enabling him or her to complete a whole host of problems that were previously difficult.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I always begin with my students discussing their personal goals. I also try to gauge what's holding them back from achieving them. From that point on, we'd work to ensure those roadblocks are brought down, clearing the path towards the student's goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I do this by equipping them with all of the tools to understand, reinforce that understanding, and learn the logical next set of skills.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I make intermediate achievement goals in between those big, perhaps scarier, ones. It always does the trick!
