I am a certified Elementary School teacher. I have experience teaching most subjects in elementary school. Along with my certification in Elementary Education, I also have my Masters in Reading. This mostly comes from the joy I get from teaching reading. I love to teach students at any grade level, especially about the basics in this subject. I think it is so important to work on strategies students need (such as improving phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency) to enhance the most important component of reading, which is comprehension.
I feel the most comfortable tutoring Math, Reading, Homework Help, Study Skills and Study Help. I can help students prepare for assessments by creating study guides and reviewing test content with them. I use all study strategies and tools, which include technology (ipad, laptop, tablet, etc.), flashcards, and hands on learning experiences to enhance my students' learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My passion for teaching branches from my philosophy that learning should be student-centered, and it should be an impressionable experience. I need to provide my students with the resources they need to succeed. Using creativity and technology in my tutoring sessions are key elements in my teaching style.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session with a student, I would take time to get to know the student on both a personal and academic level. It is important to know what the student likes or dislikes. Knowing these details such as hobbies and interests can help me as I prepare engaging lessons and/or practice study questions. Also giving the student some kind of school interest survey would be beneficial. It is important to me to see what that student thinks about the topic we will be working on. I like to make the learning process fun and worthwhile for the student, so breaking down their thoughts would be beneficial for both of us.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The best way I can lead a student to become an independent learner, is to use the gradual release model. I fully believe in this model. My job is to model what I would do to solve the problem or how I would use the strategy. The student would then do the same thing again with me. As the student becomes more comfortable with the concept, they would then be ready to complete it at an independent level. It's important for me to work as the facilitator in this model, so my student is working to remember what they need to and they are also working to solve the task at hand.
