Certified Tutor

I have an engineering background, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University. Upon completion of my graduate work in environmental and occupational health from the University of North Carolina (MS and PhD), I taught Industrial Hygiene (worker health and safety) at Purdue University for 32 years. The four most important underpinnings of the field of Industrial Hygiene are: 1) working with and caring about people, 2) a strong foundation in mathematics, 3) a strong foundation in science and 4) the ability to problem solve. I feel that my teaching experience, my educational background and most importantly, my commitment to helping students learn make me a perfect fit as your tutor for quantitative skills and admissions exams.

As a university professor, I was involved in various types of research projects, interacting with both undergrads and grad students, but my favorite part of professoring was teaching. I feel that my greatest accomplishment as a professor was the success of my students, both during their time as students, and more importantly, in their careers. I have won a number of teaching awards, both within my School of Health Sciences and at the University level. I like to teach with examples and analogies. My exams consisted of a combination of multiple choice, essay and problem solving questions, so I am well versed in all types of questions the students will be faced with on homework or exams. Also, in addition to my teaching experience at Purdue, I have been teaching a one week course in Shanghai yearly since 2008 to prepare Chinese Occupational Health and Safety professionals to take the Certified Industrial Hygienist exam and part of what I help them with are some of the tricks of the trade for successfully taking these types of exams. I also helped my daughter prepare for her GRE exam when her GRE Boot Camp program was suddenly cancelled my prep work with her helped her increase her math score approximately 100 points.

On a personal note, I am a loving, patient grandfather to 12 grandchildren. My side interests are playing the clarinet (since 4th grade) and traveling (I've been to China, South Korea, Singapore, Costa Rica, Mexico, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and others.
