Hello! My name is Joel Estelle. I'm a recent graduate in mechanical engineering from Montana State University. I have lots of experience working with kids from my time as a leader in a youth group in Bozeman, MT. I try to be as understanding as I can and I'm pretty good at comprehending where a student may be struggling or where more explanation is needed. I do enjoy making the learning experience more fun! I know that sounds crazy, (he teaches math right?!) but it is possible!

A little about myself: I'm a nerd and love all things comic books and Star Wars related. I love the outdoors and all of the wonders it provides. I also love helping people and I feel that this is a perfect job for me to do that! Thank you for looking at my profile. I hope to be in touch soon! Happy studying!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that working side by side with students and going through problems one step at a time is the best way to learn, not just through lecturing. I will work my hardest for your student to improve in their capabilities.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to spend some time to get to know the student and ask questions about where they are struggling, what classes they most enjoyed and why they liked them, and begin with a few practice problems to understand where they need to focus.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I want my students to grow in their abilities to apply the material they learn. To do this, I will often give good explanations as to why they were right or wrong on any given problem so they can know why something is right or wrong, rather than if it is just right or wrong.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try rephrasing the question into a more relate-able scenario; with helpful visualizations or situations that the student can comprehend in a better way.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Finding things that the student is passionate about, and using those as a means to understand a problem.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Asking questions for review of subjects that a student may be iffy on, and practicing with problems that they struggle with together, then independently.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Encouragement is key. Math is hard, I know, and nobody will get it right the first time. That's why I like to remind students that this is a learning process, and we will all make mistakes. Mistakes are important in the learning process so that we can learn from them.
